“I didn’t expect him to leave Manchester City so soon until he personally told me he was joining Liverpool,” said Man City star Phil Foden, revealing that his “phenomenal” teammate has made a surprising move to Liverpool.

Liverpool have made a significant addition to their coaching staff by hiring Aaron Briggs as a development coach, a move that has delighted the executives at Anfield. According to the Daily Mail, Briggs has filled the vacancy left by Vitor Matos, who was previously referred to by Jurgen Klopp as the crucial ‘link man’ between the first team and the academy.

Briggs, who is 37 years old, brings with him a wealth of experience, having spent nine years at Manchester City where he worked as an analyst and coach. His career also includes stints at Monaco and Wolfsburg, making him well-versed in different footballing cultures and methodologies. Briggs has already commenced his role at Liverpool, beginning his duties following the team’s return to pre-season training last Friday. Liverpool’s recruitment team specifically sought out Briggs for this position, marking a deliberate and strategic hire.

This recruitment is considered a major win for Liverpool, not only because Briggs was identified as the ideal replacement for Matos but also because of his background with Manchester City, one of Liverpool’s main rivals in the Premier League. As James Pearce from The Athletic pointed out, several Premier League clubs were interested in securing Briggs’ services this summer, underscoring the significance of Liverpool’s successful pursuit.

The arrival of Briggs is part of a broader effort to strengthen the backroom team under Arne Slot. Other recent additions to Slot’s team include Sipke Hulshoff, Ruben Peeters, and Fabian Otte, indicating a comprehensive strategy to enhance the club’s coaching setup. Despite his relatively young age, Briggs has gathered extensive experience across three of Europe’s top leagues, holding positions such as tactical analyst, assistant coach, and head of football methodology. This diverse background is expected to bring valuable insights and expertise to Liverpool’s development programs.

Furthermore, there are ongoing discussions about potentially adding Johnny Heitinga to the coaching staff. Heitinga, a former Everton defender, has confirmed talks with Liverpool about joining Slot’s team. This potential addition would further bolster the new coaching structure being assembled at Anfield.

The reorganization of the coaching staff comes in the wake of several departures following Klopp’s exit earlier this year. Despite these changes, Slot’s team is gradually coming together, with more appointments anticipated in the near future. The strategic recruitment of highly experienced and talented individuals like Briggs reflects Liverpool’s commitment to maintaining high standards and competitive performance. As Slot continues to build his team, the club is expected to make further significant additions in the coming weeks and months, solidifying the new coaching framework that will drive Liverpool’s ambitions in the coming seasons.
