Former Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has expressed openness to the idea of “The Special One,” Jose Mourinho, taking charge of Newcastle United or even the England national team. Despite acknowledging the unlikelihood of these scenarios, Ferdinand believes Mourinho’s diverse managerial experience could make him a suitable candidate.
Mourinho recently departed from Roma after a relatively short tenure, winning only eight out of 20 Serie A matches this year. Reports suggest he is in negotiations with Napoli and has been linked to Saudi Pro League teams, hinting that he might not remain unemployed for long.
Having managed some of Europe’s top clubs, including Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Tottenham, Mourinho boasts an illustrious career with three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and three League Cups. While Ferdinand considers a third stint at Chelsea a potential success, he deems it improbable due to the progressive approach of the club’s American owners.
Ferdinand, speaking on the Vibe with Five podcast, dismisses the idea of Mourinho returning to Chelsea, citing the owners’ reluctance to revert to previous management. Despite his personal desire to see Mourinho back at Chelsea, Ferdinand acknowledges the likelihood of Mauricio Pochettino retaining his position, even if performance falters.
Considering alternatives, Ferdinand contemplates Mourinho’s potential suitability for Newcastle United or even the England national team. However, he appreciates the remarkable performance of Newcastle’s current manager, Eddie Howe, and expresses hesitation about supporting his departure.
Ferdinand believes the Football Association (FA) hiring Mourinho is unlikely due to the stark contrast in character and personality between him and the current England manager, Gareth Southgate. Comparing the switch from Southgate to Mourinho as akin to transitioning from ready salted to vindaloo, Ferdinand asserts that such a drastic change is improbable.
