Liverpool has received a warning that Darwin Nunez may not be the ideal fit for Jurgen Klopp’s style of play, potentially hindering their chances of winning the Premier League if he starts. Despite Nunez contributing 31 goals in 57 appearances, criticism has arisen, labeling him as a raw talent with occasional missed opportunities. Former Reds defender Jose Enrique expressed doubt, stating that Nunez doesn’t suit Liverpool’s style and that Diogo Jota is a superior option.
Enrique, in an interview with Grosvenor Sport, suggested that Nunez, now 24, might not evolve into a world-class striker within Liverpool’s system. He emphasized that Nunez’s playing style lacks compatibility with Klopp’s tactics, especially regarding high pressing and intense use of the front foot. Enrique acknowledged Nunez’s talent but asserted that he hasn’t seen him as a starting member since joining Liverpool.
Liverpool recently drew 1-1 against Luton Town, with Enrique criticizing the team’s overall performance. He highlighted defensive vulnerabilities, expressing concern about 1v1 situations near the penalty area, even against lower-ranked opponents. Enrique questioned Liverpool’s chances of competing for the Premier League title, suggesting their focus should be on securing a top-four finish.
The former defender attributed Liverpool’s challenges to the absence of a world-class number six, following Fabinho’s departure, and a backup right back for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Despite acknowledging Liverpool’s offensive capabilities, Enrique argued that their defense remains too weak to match the standards set by Arsenal and Manchester City.
