Liverpool’s number 10, Alexis Mac Allister, has rejoined the Argentina national team training camp ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Bolivia. The midfielder, who had felt unwell after Liverpool’s match against Crystal Palace, was substituted at halftime by Arne Slot, who brought on Dominik Szoboszlai in his place. Although Mac Allister was dealing with discomfort, he has now recovered enough to participate in training and is set to be available for Argentina’s next match in the South American World Cup qualifiers.
Mac Allister was not featured in Argentina’s 1-1 draw with Venezuela in their previous fixture due to a groin injury. Despite being on the bench, he did not take part in the match. The groin issue had kept him from contributing to the national team in that game. However, his recovery is positive news for both Argentina and Liverpool fans, as he aims to return to full fitness and help his country in their push for World Cup qualification. Argentina currently leads the South American qualifiers standings with 19 points, holding a three-point advantage over second-placed Colombia, the team of his Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz.
During the World Cup qualification campaign so far, Mac Allister has netted only one goal, which came in a 3-0 victory over Chile. In that match, he scored from an assist by Atlético Madrid’s rising star, Julián Álvarez. Despite his relatively modest goal tally in this campaign, Mac Allister remains an important player for the national team, and his return from injury will be a significant boost for Argentina as they look to maintain their top spot in the standings.
Mac Allister’s move to Liverpool in the summer of 2024 has also been a key highlight of his career. After joining from Brighton for a transfer fee of £35 million, the 25-year-old midfielder has become an integral part of the Liverpool squad. Under the management of Arne Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp as manager, Mac Allister has made a strong impact in his first season at Anfield, contributing seven goals and seven assists. His performances have helped Liverpool maintain a strong position in the Premier League.
This season, he has started all but one match for Liverpool, missing only the EFL Cup’s 5-1 victory against West Ham. After the international break, Liverpool faces a tough schedule, starting with a match against Chelsea at Anfield on 20 October. As of now, Liverpool sits atop the Premier League standings with 18 points from seven matches, despite suffering a narrow 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest recently.
With Mac Allister back in action, he will be eager to help both Argentina and Liverpool continue their strong form as they approach key fixtures in their respective competitions.
