Liverpool forward Luis Diaz recently expressed his concerns over the possibility of Mohamed Salah leaving the club, stating that Salah’s departure would be a significant setback for the team. Salah, who renewed his contract in 2022, is currently in the final year of his deal with Liverpool. Despite persistent rumors throughout the summer about a potential move, Salah remains at Anfield. However, discussions for a contract extension seem to have stalled.
Salah has started the season in excellent form, having scored in each of Liverpool’s first three matches. His contributions have helped Liverpool secure second place in the Premier League standings, trailing only Manchester City on goal difference. In Liverpool’s recent 3-0 win over Manchester United, Salah assisted both of Diaz’s goals, showcasing his continued influence on the team’s performance.
In an interview with Telemundo, as reported by the Daily Mail, Diaz emphasized the profound impact that Salah’s departure would have on Liverpool, describing it as a significant loss for both the team and the club. He acknowledged the difficulty of the decision Salah faces, given his remaining contract year and the level of his current performances. Diaz stated, “It would be hard for both us and Liverpool. Losing him would hurt deeply. He still has a year left, and it’s not an easy decision. He always gives his best. Losing such a key player would be very challenging, but it’s his choice, and we respect that. I hope he stays.”
Following the match at Old Trafford, Salah hinted that it might have been his last appearance at the iconic stadium, telling Sky Sports, as reported by the Daily Mail, “I thought before the game this might be my last time at Old Trafford. No one has discussed a new contract with me. It’s not in my hands, it’s up to the club. We’ll see what happens.” Salah expressed his intention to focus on enjoying his final year at Liverpool without getting too caught up in contract negotiations, adding, “It’s my last year here, and I want to enjoy it without focusing too much on the contract. For now, I’m concentrating on football, and we’ll see what the future brings.”
Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has been one of the team’s most influential players. Over his seven-year tenure at Anfield, he has made 352 appearances, scored 214 goals, and provided 92 assists. He has won every major trophy with the club, except the UEFA Europa League. In the previous season, under manager Jürgen Klopp, Salah scored 25 goals and provided 14 assists in 44 matches across all competitions. Notably, his recent goal at Old Trafford matched Alan Shearer’s record for the most goals scored by a player in away games against a single Premier League team, with 10 goals against Leeds United.
Salah’s departure would undoubtedly be a major blow to Liverpool, considering his critical role and consistent performance over the years. His future remains uncertain, with his focus currently on enjoying his football rather than on contract negotiations, leaving fans and the club awaiting his final decision.
