Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is poised to gain notoriety after completing a surprising £40 million move to a Premier League competitor.

Liverpool currently has only one player remaining from the pre-Jurgen Klopp era, and that number could soon decrease. Recent reports suggest that there was an initial agreement between Liverpool and Newcastle regarding a potential transfer swap involving Anthony Gordon and Joe Gomez. The proposed deal would have seen Gordon move to Liverpool, while Gomez would have transferred to Newcastle.

However, the deal was not finalized as Newcastle managed to address their Financial Fair Play (FFP) concerns by selling two other players. This development led Gomez to reconsider his future with Liverpool. The club is now open to selling Gomez if an appropriate offer is received within this transfer window.

Gomez, who has faced persistent injury problems over the years, has found his playing time reduced due to the emergence of other central defenders. Since Liverpool’s Premier League title win in the 2019/20 season, Gomez has not started more than half of their league games. His extended tenure at Anfield, which spans a significant portion of his life, might prompt him to seek a new opportunity, especially if regular playing time remains elusive.

Despite the challenges he has faced, Gomez is seen as a valuable asset for Liverpool due to his versatility. Last season, he played in every defensive position, demonstrating his adaptability amid numerous injuries within the squad. His experience, accumulated from 224 appearances for Liverpool, positions him as a senior figure within the team. New manager Arne Slot might count on Gomez’s experience and leadership, which could influence the club’s decision to retain him.

Liverpool values Gomez for his contributions and reliability, preferring to keep him as a dependable squad player rather than allowing him to transfer to another club. Given his solid performances and his role as a versatile and experienced defender, Liverpool is likely to weigh the decision carefully before making any moves regarding Gomez’s future.
