Liverpool have reportedly scaled back their pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, opting instead to focus on more financially viable targets such as Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyökeres. The club’s change in direction comes after a substantial outlay in the summer transfer window, having already spent around £185.5 million on key signings: Florian Wirtz for £116 million, Milos Kerkez for £40 million, and Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million.
A significant obstacle in the Isak negotiations has been Newcastle’s valuation of the Swedish striker, which falls between £150 million and £200 million. Despite Isak’s stellar 2024/25 campaign—where he netted 27 goals and provided 6 assists across 42 appearances—the Magpies’ unwillingness to lower their asking price or engage in talks has pushed Liverpool to abandon the chase. There were indications that Isak was open to a move to Anfield, with the idea of linking up with star names like Mohamed Salah and new arrival Wirtz reportedly appealing to him. However, Newcastle’s rejection of a £61 million bid from another club demonstrated their reluctance to let go of their top forward, ultimately closing the door on Liverpool’s interest.
Now, under new head coach Arne Slot, Liverpool are looking at alternative options. The club has turned its attention to Viktor Gyökeres, the 26-year-old Swedish international who had an exceptional season with Sporting CP, racking up 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 matches. With a reported asking price between £70 million and £80 million, Gyökeres presents a more cost-effective solution than Isak while still offering high-end attacking output.
In addition to Gyökeres, Liverpool are monitoring several other forwards. Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt is gaining traction as a serious option, especially following encouraging conversations with his representatives. Other strikers on Liverpool’s radar include RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, though these players may come with their own financial or contractual complications.
The search for a new striker has taken on increased urgency, as Darwin Núñez appears to be nearing a move to Napoli. Additionally, winger Federico Chiesa is also rumored to be on his way out. Liverpool’s recent transfer strategy seems to be focused on reshaping the squad without breaching financial limits. The recent £35 million sale of young defender Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen has eased some financial pressure, but the club remains cautious about maintaining a balanced budget.
While some fans are disheartened by the collapse of the Isak pursuit—given his proven quality in the Premier League—many view Liverpool’s pragmatic approach as wise. The focus on emerging or undervalued talent like Gyökeres aligns with the club’s long-term ambitions and could be instrumental in sustaining both domestic and European success in the upcoming season.
