Liverpool goalkeeper Adrián San Miguel has expressed his desire to return to La Liga during the upcoming summer transfer window. In an interview with Movistar Plus, the 37-year-old discussed his future at Anfield, with reports of the interview covered by Mucho Deporte. Adrián has had a limited role at Liverpool this season and has only featured in two games since the start of the 2021/22 campaign. His current contract with Liverpool is set to expire in June, making it likely that he will seek new opportunities away from the Merseyside club.
Adrián’s professional journey began at Real Betis, and he later moved to West Ham United in 2013. After six years with the London club, he joined Liverpool on a free transfer. Now, he is considering a return to La Liga, reflecting on his long tenure in the Premier League and expressing a desire to conclude his career in Spain.
In his interview, Adrián stated, “After 11 seasons in the Premier League, I would like to return to La Liga. It would mark the end of a cycle.” Despite his age, he emphasized that he still feels fit and ready to compete. He believes that as a goalkeeper, maintaining good physical condition, avoiding serious injuries, and engaging in daily intensive training can allow one to remain competitive well into their late 30s.
Adrián highlighted his enthusiasm for continuing his career, saying, “I still feel ready to compete. Despite being 37, I feel very good. As a goalkeeper, if you take good care of yourself, avoid serious injuries, and maintain fitness, daily training provides the necessary intensity to remain competitive.” He is optimistic about his future prospects, particularly the possibility of returning to La Liga. “I believe I have plenty of time left, and I am genuinely interested in returning to La Liga. The project must be appealing and promising,” he added.
While Adrián has not yet engaged in discussions with Liverpool regarding his future, his primary focus is on La Liga. He noted, “I have not yet held talks with Liverpool. It is possible that we may have a pending conversation, but I am keeping an eye on developments in La Liga.” This indicates that he is open to exploring his options and is particularly attentive to opportunities within Spanish football.
There is also speculation about a potential return to his former club, Real Betis. With Real Betis’s current goalkeeper Claudio Bravo expected to leave the club when his contract expires next month, Adrián could emerge as a viable candidate to fill the position. His experience and familiarity with the club could make him an attractive option for Real Betis in the upcoming transfer window.
