Liverpool received disappointing news following their 3-0 win against Bournemouth yesterday.

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Anthony Gordon have taken a setback, with reports suggesting the winger is close to finalizing a new deal with Newcastle United. This development comes at a time when Liverpool has been actively pursuing the 23-year-old winger to bolster their squad, particularly on the left wing, where they have been missing a consistent attacking threat.

Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool got off to an impressive start to the season, with Slot guiding the Reds to three consecutive victories, including a commanding 3-0 win against rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. However, their momentum was halted by a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Despite controlling the game and creating numerous chances, Liverpool failed to find the back of the net, lacking the sharpness and finishing touch that is usually a hallmark of their play. This loss has drawn attention to the need for greater consistency in attack, particularly on the left side of their formation.

While Mohamed Salah has been a reliable force on the right wing, the left side of Liverpool’s attack has not been as effective. Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have both performed admirably, but neither has provided the same level of consistent threat as Salah. The club sees Anthony Gordon as a potential solution to this problem, viewing him as a player who could offer the attacking dynamism needed on the left flank.

Liverpool has reportedly made several attempts to sign Gordon from Newcastle, but the Magpies have resisted their advances. Newcastle views Gordon as a crucial part of their future plans, and now, with rumors circulating that the club is on the verge of offering him a new contract, it seems Liverpool’s chances of securing his signature have diminished further. According to sources from the *Mail* via the *Express*, Gordon’s new contract would make him the highest-paid player at Newcastle, with a lucrative offer worth around £9 million annually. If the deal goes through, it will likely close the door on any potential move to Merseyside.

In the meantime, Liverpool may reconsider their pursuit of Gordon, especially after securing the services of Federico Chiesa at a bargain price during the summer transfer window. Depending on how Chiesa performs, the Reds could decide that they no longer need to pursue Gordon as aggressively. However, if the club remains unsatisfied with their options on the left wing, they may still explore other possibilities in future transfer windows.
