Liverpool Shifts Focus to Ruben Amorim After Xabi Alonso Opts to Stay at Bayer Leverkusen

Xabi Alonso has made it official that he will remain with Bayer Leverkusen for the upcoming season, removing himself from consideration for the managerial role at Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

Liverpool, now in the hunt for a new manager since Klopp’s announcement last year, had initially eyed Alonso due to his successful stint at Leverkusen and his ties to Liverpool as a former player. However, Alonso has opted to stay with his current club.

Addressing the media before Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga fixture against Wolfsburg, Alonso expressed appreciation towards the club’s management, players, and supporters, reaffirming his dedication to continuing his work with them. He made a point of informing the players about his decision, underscoring his loyalty and regard for the club.

Alonso avoided delving into potential opportunities with Liverpool or Bayern Munich, recognizing his connections with both clubs but expressing contentment with his current role at Leverkusen.

He stressed his focus on personal development within the Leverkusen framework, indicating that he is not yet contemplating his future beyond the club.

With Alonso out of contention, Liverpool has shifted its focus to other managerial candidates, namely Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi, according to reports from The Times. Amorim’s inclination towards a back three/five system could necessitate tactical adjustments for Liverpool should he take the helm.

Under Amorim’s potential leadership, Liverpool’s lineup might undergo alterations. While Alisson is expected to retain his place in goal, the defensive setup could see Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate partnering alongside Ousmane Diomande, a standout defender from Sporting Lisbon.

Trent Alexander-Arnold may assume a role as an attacking right-wing-back, with Andrew Robertson occupying a similar position on the opposite flank. In midfield, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo may form a double pivot, with competition from Curtis Jones. Dominik Szoboszlai, a notable signing, could also vie for playing time.

In the attacking department, Mohamed Salah may operate as an inside right forward, supported by Luis Diaz on the opposite side, while Darwin Nunez is anticipated to lead the line, akin to Viktor Gyokeres’ role under Amorim at Sporting.

To sum up, Alonso’s decision to stay with Bayer Leverkusen has redirected Liverpool’s managerial pursuit towards alternatives like Amorim and De Zerbi, with potential tactical adjustments on the horizon should Amorim assume the managerial reins at Liverpool.
