Liverpool star Mohamed Salah disclosed his surprise at his “phenomenal” teammate’s decision to join Barcelona this summer, admitting he never expected him to leave Liverpool so soon.

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara is reportedly attracting interest from Catalan giants Barcelona, as he prepares to depart from Merseyside on a free transfer. This potential move is part of a broader wave of changes anticipated at Liverpool, especially with Arne Slot rumored to be taking over the managerial reins from Jurgen Klopp this summer.

Klopp’s exit from Anfield will mark the end of a remarkable nine-year spell in the Premier League, a tenure that has seen him achieve considerable success with Liverpool. However, his departure is expected to trigger a significant overhaul within the squad. Several players are likely to follow Klopp out of the club, with Thiago Alcantara confirmed as one of the key players set to leave.

Thiago joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020 for a fee of just £20 million. At the time, this transfer was regarded as a major coup for Liverpool, as Thiago was considered one of the top midfielders in the world. His signing was met with high expectations from fans and pundits alike. However, Thiago’s tenure at Liverpool has been marred by persistent injury issues, which have significantly hampered his ability to make a consistent impact on the pitch. This season, the 33-year-old midfielder has managed to make only one appearance in the Premier League, underscoring the extent of his injury struggles.

According to reports from the Spanish outlet AS, Thiago is being considered for a return to Barcelona, the club where he began his professional career. This potential move is also linked to the broader managerial changes at Barcelona, with Hansi Flick being touted as a possible successor to Xavi at the Nou Camp.

Liverpool, on their part, have already made substantial investments in their midfield, looking ahead to the future. Last year, they signed Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Wataru Endo, all of whom are expected to play pivotal roles in the club’s midfield setup moving forward.

These changes at Liverpool highlight a period of transition for the club, as they prepare for life post-Klopp. The anticipated arrival of Arne Slot signals a new direction for the team, and with Klopp’s departure, the club is likely to undergo a significant reshaping of its squad. Thiago’s departure, while notable, is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the team’s roster and build a squad capable of competing at the highest levels in the coming years.
