In a thrilling contest at Old Trafford, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed the club’s decision to challenge the Football Association’s (FA) ruling that handed defender Patrick Dorgu a three-match ban. The Danish full-back was shown a straight red card during United’s hard-fought 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, following a controversial tackle on Omari Hutchinson.
The incident occurred in the 43rd minute when Dorgu’s challenge initially went unnoticed by the on-field referee. However, after intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the referee reviewed the footage at the pitchside monitor and ultimately decided to dismiss Dorgu for serious foul play. As a result, United was reduced to ten men, and the defender now faces suspension for three crucial matches. If the suspension stands, Dorgu will be forced to sit out the upcoming FA Cup fixture against Fulham, as well as key Premier League encounters with Arsenal and Leicester City.
Following the FA’s ruling, Amorim voiced his frustration and confirmed that the club would appeal the decision. He strongly opposed the suspension, calling it “unfair” and expressing his belief that Dorgu did not intend to commit a reckless foul. “He wants to play the ball,” Amorim explained, acknowledging that while Dorgu’s approach may have been overly aggressive, it was not malicious. The manager also highlighted the young defender’s inexperience but insisted that Dorgu is more than capable of competing at the Premier League level.
Beyond the controversial red card, the match itself was filled with dramatic moments that kept United fans on edge. The game started unfavorably for the Red Devils when a lack of coordination between Dorgu and goalkeeper Andre Onana allowed Ipswich’s Jaden Philogene to capitalize and score an easy goal. However, United quickly responded, with an own goal from Ipswich captain Sam Morsy and a well-taken effort from Matthijs de Ligt putting the home side ahead.
Just as United seemed to have regained control, Dorgu’s sending-off shifted the momentum once again. Ipswich took advantage of their numerical superiority, and Philogene struck again to level the score. Despite the setback, United showed resilience and determination. Shortly after the second half began, defender Harry Maguire rose to meet a cross and delivered a decisive header to restore United’s lead.
Maguire’s goal ultimately secured all three points for United, but the controversial red card remained a major talking point after the match. With Amorim and the club set to appeal the FA’s decision, it remains to be seen whether Dorgu’s suspension will be overturned, allowing him to feature in United’s upcoming fixtures.
