Fresh reports from The Mirror suggest that Manchester United are considering a shock summer approach for Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, in what would be one of the most controversial transfer pursuits in Premier League history.
The Red Devils are believed to be reshaping their midfield ahead of next season, particularly with Casemiro expected to depart Old Trafford. As part of that rebuild, Mac Allister has reportedly emerged as a surprise name on United’s shortlist. The Argentine, who played a crucial role in Liverpool’s recent success, is now being linked with an unexpected move away from Anfield.
Speculation about Mac Allister’s future has intensified following a somewhat inconsistent campaign under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot. Despite being instrumental in Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title triumph, there are whispers that the 27-year-old could be open to exploring a fresh challenge. His performances remain highly regarded, but the changing dynamics at the club have fueled talk of a possible exit.
Manchester United’s interest has sparked widespread debate, though they are not the only club monitoring the situation. Spanish giants Real Madrid are also reportedly keen on the World Cup winner. According to reports in Spain, Madrid view Mac Allister as a strong long-term addition to their midfield options and are closely assessing the possibility of making a move.
The midfielder has previously expressed a desire to play in La Liga at some stage in his career, which may hand Real Madrid an edge over any English side attempting to secure his signature. That admission has only added to the growing belief that, if he were to leave Liverpool, Spain might be his preferred destination.
However, a direct transfer between Liverpool and Manchester United remains highly improbable. The fierce rivalry between the two historic clubs makes such dealings exceptionally rare. Both sides have traditionally avoided selling players directly to one another, preferring instead to negotiate with clubs abroad rather than strengthen a domestic rival.
In fact, the last direct transfer between the two rivals dates back to 1964, when Phil Chisnall made the switch from United to Liverpool. Although players like Michael Owen and Paul Ince have represented both teams, they did so only after spells elsewhere, not through a direct move.
For now, the prospect of Mac Allister crossing that divide appears unlikely, but the rumors have certainly stirred intrigue.
