Mason Greenwood Chooses to Change Nationality for Representation in a Prominent International Team.

Mason Greenwood, having only appeared once for England against Iceland in September 2020, currently finds himself on loan at Getafe and is unlikely to be selected by Gareth Southgate for the Euro 2024 tournament in June.

In February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges against him, including attempted rape, engaging in controlling behavior, and assault causing bodily harm—charges he had consistently denied. Following this, the 22-year-old chose to continue his career away from Manchester United, opting to join Getafe.

Over the past few years, there have been persistent reports indicating the Jamaican Football Federation’s interest in Greenwood representing Jamaica instead of England, a possibility due to his eligibility through his father, Andrew.

Manager Hallgrimsson confirmed Greenwood’s potential inclusion in the Jamaican team during a CONCACAF Nations League preview event in Dallas, expressing a desire to have him on the squad but highlighting that the ultimate decision rests with the player himself.

During his time at Getafe since September, Greenwood has made a significant impact, tallying five assists and seven goals. His standout performances have fueled speculation about a potential summer transfer to Barcelona.

United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has suggested that the team will assess Greenwood’s future at the conclusion of the season.
