Mikel Arteta is facing a significant challenge at Arsenal following their 1-0 loss to Newcastle, and this issue isn’t solely related to VAR or refereeing decisions. The match was filled with controversy, with Anthony Gordon’s second-half goal standing despite multiple contentious incidents. Arteta expressed his frustration at the post-match press conference, vehemently asserting that the goal should not have been allowed. He cited various reasons, including questions about the ball being in play, a potential foul on Gabriel Magalhaes, a Joelinton handball, and potential offside.
Jamie Carragher, however, shifted the focus away from VAR and referees, suggesting that Arsenal should concentrate on what they can control on the pitch. Carragher believed that the goal, in essence, was fair, despite the uncertainties surrounding several aspects. He pointed out the ambiguity regarding the ball going out of play and the difficulty of determining the foul on Gabriel and the offside due to camera angles.
Carragher also defended VAR, stating that if there isn’t enough evidence to disallow a goal, it should be given. He acknowledged the frustration of Arsenal fans but argued that’s how the system works. However, Carragher’s analysis extended beyond VAR, as he raised concerns about Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya. Raya was criticized for his positioning and decision-making, especially in the goal conceded against Newcastle.
This isn’t the first time Raya has faced scrutiny; Carragher and Gary Neville had previously criticized him after a mistake against Chelsea. Carragher highlighted Raya’s positioning and tendency to edge too far forward, leaving himself vulnerable. He emphasized that Raya’s performance was a more significant concern for Arteta than VAR decisions.
Raya’s struggles have made his position at Arsenal challenging, particularly as he competes with Aaron Ramsdale. Arsene Wenger had expressed support for Ramsdale earlier in the week, suggesting that he could regain the starting position. Arteta’s decision to bring in Raya was aimed at creating competition in the goalkeeper position, but so far, it hasn’t yielded the desired results.
Now, Arsenal appears to have two uncertain and out-of-form goalkeepers, rather than the intended scenario of having two top-class options. The choice for the upcoming Champions League match against Sevilla may provide insight into Arteta’s view of the situation.
