No shocker—Liverpool are making major moves! The Reds now lead the race to sign one of England’s top young talents, and this transfer could be a game-changer!

**Liverpool and Newcastle to Compete for Premier League Defensive Star**

Liverpool and Newcastle United are set to battle it out in the summer transfer window for one of the Premier League’s most sought-after defenders.

Newcastle previously attempted to bolster their defensive options in the last transfer window but fell short in their efforts to sign Crystal Palace center-back Marc Guehi. The Magpies had been keen to bring in defensive reinforcements, but their pursuit of the highly-rated England international did not materialize.

Guehi has been in impressive form, and his performances at Euro 2024 further increased his stock. His displays on the international stage caught the eye of several elite clubs, making him one of the most in-demand defenders ahead of the upcoming transfer window. Top European sides, along with Premier League giants, are closely monitoring his situation as they look to strengthen their backlines.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has weighed in on the situation, predicting that Liverpool and Newcastle will both push hard to sign Guehi this summer. However, Robinson believes Liverpool have the upper hand in the race for his signature.

    ### **Liverpool in Pole Position to Sign Guehi?**

Speaking to *Football Insider*, Robinson highlighted why Liverpool could be the frontrunners in securing Guehi’s services.

“Liverpool would be the perfect destination for him,” Robinson said. “Crystal Palace know they won’t be able to keep him forever, and this summer represents their best chance to cash in on him.”

Despite his contract running until 2026, Guehi will enter the final year of his deal after this season, which could see his valuation slightly decrease. However, a potential bidding war between top clubs could keep his price high.

Robinson pointed out that Newcastle were aggressive in their pursuit last summer, and Palace will likely demand a similar fee this time around. Having developed Guehi into a top-tier defender, both the club and player recognize that the time for a transfer may have arrived.

“The final decision will depend on which club is willing to meet Palace’s asking price,” Robinson added. “And it’s not just English clubs vying for his signature—there is interest from European sides as well.”

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish is known for being a shrewd negotiator, and he will ensure the club gets the best possible deal for their star defender. This means securing Guehi’s services won’t come cheap for any interested club.

    ### **Liverpool’s Need for Defensive Reinforcements**

Liverpool are desperate to strengthen their defense, with incoming manager Arne Slot keen on adding quality reinforcements to his squad. The uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s future has only intensified their need for defensive stability.

Financially, Liverpool are in a strong position to invest, having been relatively restrained in their spending over recent windows. This puts them in an advantageous spot regarding Premier League spending rules (PSR) and Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, allowing them to pursue a significant signing like Guehi.

With Liverpool’s financial flexibility and the pressing need for defensive reinforcements, they may have the edge over Newcastle in securing Guehi’s signature. However, competition for the defender remains fierce, with Palace unlikely to let him go without a hefty transfer fee.

Ultimately, the coming months will determine whether Liverpool can capitalize on their position and finalize a deal, or if Newcastle—or even another European club—can swoop in and secure the talented defender.
