Manchester United have reportedly begun negotiations to sign AC Milan’s star forward **Rafael Leão**, according to Spanish outlet *Fichajes*, in what would be a surprising addition to their attacking overhaul under new manager **Rúben Amorim**.
Following a disappointing season in front of goal, the Red Devils are determined to rejuvenate their frontline during this summer transfer window. The club has already secured the services of Brazilian attacker **Matheus Cunha** from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee believed to be around **£62.5 million**. They are also actively pursuing **Bryan Mbeumo** from Brentford, with the London club said to be demanding a similar figure to part ways with the Cameroon international.
Now, *Fichajes* reports that Manchester United are turning their attention to Rafael Leão as they continue to reshape their attacking options. This comes amid widespread speculation that several of United’s current wide forwards — including **Marcus Rashford**, **Antony**, **Jadon Sancho**, and **Alejandro Garnacho** — could be on their way out this summer. In response, the club is considering Leão as a major target to fill the potential void on the flanks.
However, the chase for the Portuguese international is expected to be highly competitive. Bundesliga giants **Bayern Munich** are also keen on securing Leão’s signature, especially with **Leroy Sané** likely to depart the Allianz Arena in the coming weeks. While Milan are aware of the growing interest in their prized asset, they are reluctant to let him go easily. Leão still has three years left on his current contract, and the Italian club have reportedly set an asking price of **£84 million**.
Despite that, there is a growing belief that Milan could be persuaded to lower their demands. Leão is said to have expressed a desire to leave San Siro after a challenging campaign last season, potentially opening the door for a cut-price move. Reports suggest that Milan might accept an offer in the region of **£59 million**, particularly if the forward pushes for an exit.
Leão has been a pivotal figure at AC Milan in recent years, having played a crucial role in the club’s **2021/22 Serie A title** triumph. He also contributed to their **Supercoppa Italiana** success last season. While his most recent season wasn’t his most prolific, the 25-year-old still managed to record **12 goals and 11 assists** in 50 appearances across all competitions.
While Leão’s talent is undeniable, some believe that if United succeed in signing Mbeumo, adding another wide attacker might be unnecessary. In that case, the funds could be better spent on strengthening other key areas, particularly the centre-forward and midfield positions. Regardless, the coming weeks will reveal whether Manchester United are serious about making a formal offer for Leão as they aim to build a more potent attacking unit.
