Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, fueled by envy over Liverpool’s positive media coverage, turns this sentiment into motivation for their pursuit of another Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp’s accomplishments at Anfield have not only caused tension for Pep Guardiola due to media coverage disparities but have also contributed to Manchester City’s success. Despite former assistant coach Brian Kidd advising Guardiola to downplay the League Cup and focus on young players, Guardiola took the competition seriously, securing four consecutive victories between 2018 and 2021. However, he felt these achievements received less recognition compared to Liverpool’s triumphs in 2022 and 2024.

Guardiola expressed resentment, believing the media portrayed Liverpool’s successes differently than City’s. He cited instances, such as after City narrowly defeated Liverpool in May 2019, where he felt Liverpool’s accomplishments were celebrated more. Despite his claims that the media and everyone in England supported Liverpool during their title battle, this assertion appeared exaggerated, given the diverse fan base in English football.

Guardiola questioned media bias when City faced scrutiny over financial violations, sarcastically connecting it to Steven Gerrard’s slip in 2014. Despite these perceived biases, Guardiola found motivation in City’s rivalry with Liverpool, emphasizing the continuous drive required for a successful team. He highlighted the importance of competition and how Liverpool’s success pushed City to perform better.

Ultimately, Guardiola acknowledged Liverpool’s crucial role in City’s success, recognizing Klopp’s influence and how Liverpool’s achievements motivated City to excel. Despite media disparities and occasional grievances, Guardiola credited Liverpool as a driving force behind City’s competitiveness and success on the football stage.
