Liverpool is actively in pursuit of a successor for Jurgen Klopp, who declared his departure from the club by the end of the current season in January. The upcoming manager faces the formidable challenge of stepping into Klopp’s shoes, with few candidates seemingly equipped for such a demanding role.
Among the top contenders to replace Klopp is former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso. Alonso has drawn attention for his managerial success at Bayer Leverkusen, leading them to the top of the Bundesliga and orchestrating a significant victory over Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal quarter-final, maintaining an unbeaten record for the season.
Alonso’s impressive track record, including rescuing a relegation-threatened Werkself last season, has not only piqued Liverpool’s interest but has also reportedly intrigued Chelsea. The Blues are considering Alonso as a potential replacement for Mauricio Pochettino should the Argentine fail to reverse the club’s fortunes.
According to Alonso’s former teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger, the Spaniard is keen on coaching Liverpool. Schweinsteiger believes that coaching Liverpool is Alonso’s ultimate dream, a sentiment echoed by another ex-teammate, Claudio Pizarro, in recent discussions with FootballTransfers.
In an interview with footballwave, Schweinsteiger remarked, “I know Xabi, and I believe that coaching Liverpool is his ultimate dream. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take over at Liverpool someday. I hope he stays in the Bundesliga a while longer because he has been a tremendous asset to the league. If it weren’t for Leverkusen’s strong performance, Bayern would have a much larger lead in the standings. The title race would look very different.”
