Ruben Amorim: “My job here is extremely challenging, but I remain committed to my principles”

Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur marked their 12th Premier League loss of the season, and Ruben Amorim, the club’s manager, pointed to missed chances as the key reason for their failure. Despite facing a significant injury crisis, with several key players unavailable, United created several opportunities but failed to convert, ultimately falling short. The only goal of the match came from James Maddison, but the Red Devils had plenty of chances to equalize, with Alejandro Garnacho notably squandering a golden opportunity by blasting the ball over the bar from just eight yards out. Other players like Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee also struggled to get past Tottenham’s goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who was the standout performer of the match.

Amorim acknowledged the difficulties his team faced, particularly with injuries and illness depleting the squad. He explained that despite creating chances, they were unable to score, which ultimately decided the match. He emphasized that the game was always going to be decided by a single goal, especially as both teams were struggling. Amorim also noted that the loss of key players, such as Amad Diallo, Manuel Ugarte, and Kobbie Mainoo, made it difficult for his team to play with their usual structure. Without these players, Amorim had to adapt his tactics, but this proved challenging, especially when trying to implement a style of play with new and unfamiliar personnel.

The manager further reflected on the challenges of working with a team that was constantly forced to adapt to injuries and absences. He admitted that it was hard to maintain consistency, particularly when trying to balance attacking and defensive responsibilities for players like Bruno Fernandes. Despite the setbacks, Amorim maintained that his focus was on sticking to his principles, even though he acknowledged the difficulties of working with a squad in crisis.

In addition to the injuries, Amorim had to rely on eight teenagers on the substitutes’ bench, highlighting the extent of the squad’s depletion. With few senior players available, the manager opted to bring on Chido Obi for his Premier League debut in the final minute, but no further substitutions were made. Amorim remained hopeful that these young players would get more opportunities in future games, particularly in cup and European competitions. He recognized the pain of losing so many matches but believed that the experience would eventually help the team grow and improve.

Ultimately, the loss to Tottenham underscored United’s struggles with injuries and missed opportunities. While Amorim’s side showed signs of creating good chances, the inability to finish them and the absence of key players left them with little hope of getting a positive result. The pressure is mounting on the manager as he works to steer the team through this tough period.
