(Video) Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold silences critics with stunning free-kick for England

Trent Alexander-Arnold silenced his critics on Sunday with a brilliant free-kick that helped England secure a 2-0 victory over Finland. The goal came in the 74th minute of the match, easing the pressure on England after a nervy contest in which Finland posed a significant threat. Jack Grealish had earlier put England ahead in the first half, but Finland continued to test the Three Lions and looked capable of drawing level on several occasions.

England entered this match under pressure following a shocking 2-1 home defeat to Greece in midweek, a result that put their hopes of promotion to League A in jeopardy. As the game against Finland progressed, it became clear that England needed to hold on to all three points to recover their momentum. Finland’s continued threat made it a tense affair until Alexander-Arnold stepped up and delivered a moment of individual brilliance, curling a free-kick over the wall and past Finland’s Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.

The strike from Alexander-Arnold, known for his set-piece mastery, was vintage in style. The Liverpool full-back has a history of scoring stunning free-kicks and has already registered six direct free-kick goals for Liverpool in the Premier League. His ability to deliver under pressure once again shone through, leaving pundits and fans alike in awe.

Former England defender Stuart Pearce, providing commentary for talkSPORT, was full of praise for the goal. He described it as “a super free-kick” and noted that Hradecky had no chance of stopping it, saying, “The goalkeeper is nowhere near it!” Alexander-Arnold’s effort was widely celebrated as a piece of individual brilliance that provided a rare moment of quality in what had otherwise been a tense and scrappy game.

Lee Hendrie, a former England and Aston Villa midfielder, echoed similar sentiments while speaking to Sky Sports. He pointed out how Alexander-Arnold’s strike finally gave England the cushion they needed. “It’s our left-back! It’s a brilliant free-kick,” Hendrie said. He added that the substitutions of Ollie Watkins and Noni Madueke helped England stretch Finland, giving Alexander-Arnold the opportunity to shine. Hendrie emphasized that the pace and precision of the free-kick were key to beating Hradecky, who managed to get a fingertip on the ball but couldn’t keep it out. Hendrie noted it was one of the few bright moments for England in the second half.

Matthew Upson, a former England centre-back covering the game for BBC Radio 5 Live, was equally impressed. He remarked that while the free-kick seemed tailor-made for Alexander-Arnold, it still required perfect execution, and the Liverpool defender delivered in spectacular fashion. Upson highlighted the pace of the shot, which bent over the wall and found its way inside the near post. He concluded by saying the goal was a fitting demonstration of Alexander-Arnold’s technical ability and mastery with the ball at his feet.

Overall, Alexander-Arnold’s stunning free-kick was the standout moment in a vital win for England, providing the second goal that ultimately sealed the victory and eased the nerves after a turbulent week for the team.
