Mauricio Pochettino refrained from criticizing the referees despite Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. Trailing at halftime due to goals from Diogo Jota and Conor Bradley, Chelsea’s momentary optimism from Christopher Nkunku was dashed by Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz. Two rejected penalty calls for Chelsea stirred controversy, but Pochettino avoided assigning blame, acknowledging Liverpool’s superiority.

Pochettino conceded, “It’s not a conclusive excuse. They were worthy winners, superior to us from the start.” He applauded Liverpool’s performance, emphasizing their competitiveness and Chelsea’s struggles. Reflecting on missed opportunities, Pochettino noted a chance at 2-0 that could have boosted confidence but acknowledged disappointment in their overall performance even with a potential win.

Looking ahead to the Carabao Cup final rematch at Wembley, Pochettino issued a stern warning to Chelsea, urging significant improvement for any chance at lifting the trophy. Despite acknowledging the game’s different dynamics away from Anfield, he stressed the need for better performance, stating, “Learning is what’s important to us. We were up against the best team in the league. It is healthy for us to believe that we must do better.”

The Argentine manager emphasized the upcoming neutral venue, expressing optimism for a more competitive scenario. He acknowledged the difficulty they would face without improvement, highlighting the importance of learning from the encounter against the league’s top team.
