Former Arsenal academy graduate Jay Bothroyd has expressed his desire to see Ivan Toney join his former club during the upcoming January transfer window. Arsenal had a successful transfer window, bolstering their squad with notable signings such as Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, and David Raya. These additions aimed to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad and elevate their chances of being title contenders.
However, the departure of key defenders like Rob Holding, Nuno Tavares, and Kieran Tierney left Arsenal somewhat vulnerable at the back. While fans hoped for a new defender to be signed, the team appears well-prepared for the demanding season. The prospect of Arsenal making a significant move for a striker like 27-year-old English international Ivan Toney in the next transfer window might be surprising to many.
Arteta already has options like Gabriel Jesus, the in-form Eddie Nketiah, and Kai Havertz to call upon if needed. Moreover, the summer departure of Folarin Balogun added depth to their attacking options. Consequently, acquiring a new center-forward doesn’t seem to be a top priority for the club.
However, former Arsenal academy graduate Jay Bothroyd has urged the club to pursue Toney in the next transfer window. He highlighted Toney’s goal-scoring ability, strength, and leadership on the pitch, suggesting that he could score at least 20 Premier League goals a season in a top team. Bothroyd’s enthusiasm for Toney’s potential at Arsenal is evident as he stated, “I would love Arsenal to sign him.”
Ivan Toney is currently serving an eight-month ban for breaching the Premier League’s betting rules and is set to return in January. While Chelsea is reportedly keen on signing him, other clubs are also competing for his signature. However, Brentford, his current club, has set a substantial £80 million price tag on him.
Despite Bothroyd’s endorsement and Toney’s potential, it’s unlikely that Arsenal will make an aggressive move for the striker in January. The club’s focus may lie more on reinforcing their defense or midfield depth, as they have already invested heavily in attacking options.
