Newcastle United is actively pursuing a deal for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the upcoming January transfer window. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their midfield, especially with the suspension of Sandro Tonali, their key summer signing, due to betting charges.
The club’s interest in Phillips predates the news of Tonali’s likely suspension, and sources suggest that intermediaries have informed Newcastle that Manchester City is open to letting Phillips leave in January. Financial constraints related to Financial Fair Play regulations have led Newcastle to consider an initial loan deal, a proposition that Manchester City is reportedly willing to entertain. However, City would only agree to a loan if there is an option for Newcastle to make a permanent purchase later.
Despite interest from various clubs across England and Europe, including Aston Villa, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus, Phillips is reportedly most interested in joining Newcastle.
The 27-year-old midfielder initially hoped to prove himself at Manchester City and aimed to return to action by Christmas. However, it’s becoming apparent that he is not part of Pep Guardiola’s long-term plans for the club. Despite overcoming injury issues from his first season at the Etihad Stadium, Phillips has seen limited game time this season, playing only 215 minutes and starting just one match – a 1-0 loss to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup’s third round.
Despite the lack of club playing time, Phillips has maintained his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad during this season’s international windows. Meanwhile, Newcastle is also in discussions with Feyenoord to terminate Yankuba Minteh’s loan in January. The winger has impressed his parent club with performances in the Netherlands after returning to Tyneside for treatment on a hamstring issue.
