Manchester United is set to initiate discussions regarding a contract extension for their manager, Erik ten Hag, as reported by 90min. Ten Hag, who joined the team in 2022, guided United to third place in the Premier League and secured the Carabao Cup in his debut season. Although the current season commenced with a few setbacks, including four losses and off-field issues, the team rebounded with two recent victories, notably a 3-0 triumph against Crystal Palace.
Ten Hag’s initial contract with United extends until June 2025, with a provision for a one-year extension. Discussions about renewing his contract were originally scheduled around the 18-month mark. Despite ongoing uncertainties due to the Glazer family’s exploration of strategic options, Chief Executive Richard Arnold is overseeing contract renewals for both players and staff, expressing contentment with Ten Hag’s performance.
The Glazer family’s contemplation of investment or sale has created an air of instability within the club. Despite this, Arnold and John Murtough, content with Ten Hag’s leadership, are set to support him. Ten Hag has emphasized the importance of establishing and maintaining high standards within the club, given the lack of a cohesive culture before his arrival from Ajax.
United’s recent challenges include public disputes with key players like Cristiano Ronaldo and the removal of Harry Maguire as captain. Nevertheless, the club views Ten Hag as a unifying force essential for team cohesion and stability amidst uncertainty surrounding ownership. Potential buyers, such as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim, are awaiting responses from the Glazer family, with Raine Group overseeing the takeover process. The family may be seeking £6 billion for a complete sale of the club.
