Peter Schmeichel, the renowned former goalkeeper of Manchester United, has expressed doubts about Liverpool’s ability to compete with Manchester City in the ongoing Premier League season. Despite Liverpool’s strong start to the season, winning four games and drawing once out of five, Schmeichel believes that City’s superior back line puts them one step ahead.
During the summer transfer window, Liverpool focused on strengthening their midfield, bringing in four new midfielders. In contrast, Manchester City secured replacements for departing players in various positions, notably acquiring Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol for £90 million. Schmeichel points out City’s formidable back four comprising Akanji, Walker, Dias, and Gvardiol, emphasizing the challenge Liverpool faces in matching their defensive strength.
Schmeichel shared his perspective during a Premier League matchday live commentary, asserting that Liverpool, in his opinion, cannot keep up with Manchester City. He acknowledged Arsenal as a potential competitor but deemed it a significant uncertainty. He further emphasized Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities, concurring with fellow commentator Steve McManaman on the exposed nature of Liverpool’s defense.
McManaman, a former Liverpool midfielder and co-commentator, joined in criticizing Liverpool’s defense. He acknowledged Liverpool’s offensive prowess and their ability to score goals but pointed out their defensive weaknesses, predicting that they will concede goals due to their vulnerability at the back. He anticipated an exciting and eventful season for Liverpool, with many ups and downs, owing to their entertaining style of play but also their defensive frailties.
Despite concerns about Liverpool’s defense, McManaman noted improvements in their starting lineup compared to the previous season, highlighting the recovery of injured players like Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota. This recovery adds strength to Liverpool’s lineup and provides hope for a more competitive season.
