Stoke City has parted ways with manager Alex Neil after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday. Despite a significant overhaul with 18 new players during the summer, the team struggled, securing only six wins in 20 league games, placing them in 20th position, just two points above the relegation zone.
In response to the team’s lackluster performance, Neil was dismissed, and for the upcoming match against Swansea, Paul Gallagher has assumed the role of interim manager, supported by Alex Morris and former Stoke player Ryan Shawcross. Chairman John Coates expressed gratitude for Neil’s dedication and contributions to the club, acknowledging his integrity. Coates emphasized the need for swift progress and outlined the ongoing search for Neil’s successor to guide the team toward success.
Coates remarked on the club’s website, “Alex is a man of absolute integrity who has given his all for Stoke City, and we would like to thank him for his efforts while at the club.” While recognizing the foundation laid by Neil in assembling a new group of players, Coates justified the difficult decision to change direction based on the team’s current performance.
He highlighted the paramount importance of the club’s success, stating, “Nothing matters to me more than the success of our club, and we are now working towards the appointment of Alex’s successor.” Stoke City, which enjoyed a decade-long stint in the Premier League from 2008 to 2018 under Tony Pulis and Mark Hughes, was known for its formidable presence, especially during Pulis’ tenure. However, the team has been unable to reclaim its Premier League status since relegation, and Coates remains focused on finding a new leader to steer the club toward both short-term recovery and long-term success.
