Football pundit Michael Bridges has expressed his frustration with Manchester City player Jack Grealish, claiming that watching him play “irritates the hell” out of him. On The Optus Sport Football Podcast, Bridges discussed the challenges a striker might face when playing alongside Grealish, emphasizing the winger’s tendency to go back and pass the ball to the left-back instead of creating goal-scoring opportunities.
However, Pep Guardiola offered a contrasting perspective, praising Grealish’s recent terrific form. The arrival of winger Jeremy Doku at the Etihad Stadium has brought attention to the differences in playing style between Grealish and Doku. While Grealish is commended for ball retention, Doku is recognized as one of Europe’s most lethal dribblers.
Bridges expressed his frustration, imagining himself as a striker wondering if Grealish would deliver a cross or return the ball to the left-back. In contrast, he highlighted Doku’s ability to take on defenders and generate opportunities inside the box.
Yet, Grealish’s role in the Manchester City team might not be fully understood by Bridges. Last season, both Grealish and Bernardo Silva seemed tasked with providing control, technical security, and defensive workrate. The directness and chance creation responsibilities fell to midfielders Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan.
This season, Jeremy Doku appears to have the freedom to lead City’s attacks independently. Grealish, adapting to the system, selectively moves inside and takes a more aggressive approach when required. His notable performance in the Manchester Derby showcased his ability to adapt to both the system and team requirements.
